Our Bodies, Our Lives HIV AIDs Conference, San Diego.

Pacific College of Oriental Medicine Library - News
Our Bodies, Our Lives: Health Education for Living with HIV/AIDS
On Saturday, October 9, 2010, Pacific College San Diego held a local conference on HIV and AIDS health education and awareness at the Manchester Grand Hyatt. This conference was made possible by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) Award for 2009-2011 to reach out to the San Diego community with a series of local informative conferences to assist the public in finding health resources that are close at hand. Hosted by Naomi Broering and Gregory Chauncey of Pacific College, the conference included presentations by David Nash (National Library of Medicine), Terry Cunningham (Chief of STD/HIV Branch for Public Health Services, San Diego County), and Thomas Kouo, L.Ac. (PCOM Alum). Offering a new approach to those who need HIV information, this conference was to increase the awareness of free, reliable, online resources, including the NLM, National Institute of Health (NIH), MedlinePlus, PubMed, and the NIH AIDS Info System.

Pacific College Of Oriental Medicine Library’s Services

In 2003 the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine Library began an outreach consumer health information service in the San Diego area. This Blog introduces the library’s collaboration with community centers to teach local residents how to access online health information. We want to let the community know about our outreach services and encourage input.

In 2004, with funding from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM), the library began a Senior Health Information Service, which became very popular with senior health centers and the First Lutheran Church in San Diego. Since then, the Library extended the program into a Health Information Literacy Center Service in collaboration with local public libraries, churches, clinics and community centers to provide free computer classes, workshops and presentations on “How to Access Health Information” using the National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) and NIH’s online resources including MedlinePlus, PubMed, Clinical Trials, ToxNet and DHHS Health Info. In 2006, the library won a Health Award from the National Commission of Libraries and Information Service (NCLIS) in Washington, DC. In 2008, the library was recognized by local chapters of the AARP, KPBS and TV Channel 6.

In 2009, with funding from the NLM, the library added a Health Information Literacy Service of workshops on HIV/AIDs in San Diego, and in 2010 with a new project will include conferences, with medical speakers and library specialists on accessing authenticated information. Plans are to continue partnerships with more public libraries, community centers, clinics and high schools to bring valuable free NIH resources to local residents, students and health professionals.
Recently, this fall 2009, the library completed 6 classes and workshops throughout San Diego. More are planned. Upcoming events will be announced on this blog. We welcome questions and input.
